Meherpur District
English
Etymology
Refers to the district of Meherpur, a transliteration of মেহেরপুর, a compound of মেহের (meher) + পুর (pura, “city”); there are two theories on the origin of the first element:
- Named after the Sufi saint Meher Ali Shah; thus from Persian مهر (“friendship, love”).
- Named after the astrologer-astronomer Varāhamihira; thus from Sanskrit मिहिर (mihira, “sun”).
