Etymology
- Claimed as a Latin loanword, from (reconstructed root) Vulgar Latin *imperātus (compare Romanian împărat, Aromanian ampirat), from Latin imperātor.[3]
- In Albanian itself it appears as a compound of mbi (“upon, over, above”) + re (“cloud(s)”); meaning "above the cloud(s)", as "the highest".
- re from from Old Albanian ren, singularized plural of *ri, from Proto-Albanian *rina, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rinéHti (“move”). Cognate to Illyrian *rhinos (“fog, mist”), Proto-Slavic *rinǫti (“push, shove”), Ancient Greek ὀρίνω (orínō, “to stir, move, excite”)), present of *h₃reiH-.
- See also: re (“care, consideration, attention”). From Proto-Albanian *raida, from Proto-Indo-European *rey- (“reason, count”). Cognate with Latin rātiō (“reason, judgment”), Old Norse ráða, English read.
