Borrowed from Ukrainian Маріу́поль (Mariúpolʹ), from Russian Мариу́поль (Mariúpolʹ), from Greek Μαριούπολη (Marioúpoli), from being named after the Virgin Mary, Empress Maria Feodorovna, the Crimean Greek city of Mariampol, from Μαρία (María) + πόλη (póli).
