Etymology
From Proto-Oceanic *ma-ramaR (“shine, be bright”) (compare Hawaiian malama (“moon, moonlight”)) from *ramaR (“light, luminosity”) (compare Hawaiian lama (“torch, light”)), probably from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *damaR from Proto-Austronesian *damaR (though the Malayo-Polynesian examples outside of Oceanic such as Malay damar mostly refer to plant resins, said to be related in meaning through their use in torches).
