Etymology
From Turkish Mamayköy (“Mamay village”). The exact etymology of "Mamay" is uncertain; historian Nicolae Iorga associated it with Mamai, the commander of the Golden Horde in the 1370s, whereas local folk etymology connects it with Tatar май (may, “butter”).
