From Proto-Balto-Slavic *maldas, from Proto-Indo-European *ml̥dus (soft, weak). Cognates include Old Church Slavonic младъ (mladŭ, young), Latin mollis (soft, weak), Sanskrit मृदु (mṛdú, soft, mild, weak), Ancient Greek βλαδύς (bladús, weak) and ἀμαλδύνω (amaldúnō, to weaken, destroy).
