Etymology

From French malacologie, contraction of malacozoologie, from the (obsolete) taxonomic name Malacozoa + French -ologie (-ology), Malacozoa being in turn from Ancient Greek μαλακός (malakós, soft) + ζῷον (zôion, animal).

Equivalent to malaco- + -logy.
