Etymology
First attested as gastel in 1343. Compound of the toponym Luik (“Liège”) and the common toponymic element gestel (“inn, guesthouse”). The element Luik was added to distinguish the settlement from Moergestel and refers to the former lord of the village, the Prince-Bishop of Liège.
