Etymology
First attested as liticawerum in 1381. Calque of West Frisian Lytsewierrum, a compound of Old Frisian lītik (“little, small”) and the dative plural form of weer (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The element lyts was added to distinguish the settlement from Grotewierum.
