From Yiddish לאַקס (laks, “salmon”), from Old High German lahs, from Proto-Germanic *lahsaz (“salmon”), from Proto-Indo-European *laḱs- (“salmon, trout”). Cognate to Icelandic lax, German Lachs. More at lax.
