Hypercorrection of earlier *Lolé, attested in Medieval Latin as Lole, from Mozarabic *al-Olea. The first element is from Arabic ال (al-, “the”). The second element is either from Arabic عُلْيَا (ʿulyā, “hill”) or from Latin olea (“olive tree”).
