Unknown. Compare Czech lotr (“rascal, scoundrel”), Polish łotr (“villain, scoundrel”), from German Lotter (“loafer, idler”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *ludraz (“useless; worthless; bad”). Latin latro (“highwayman, bandit”) is thought to be unrelated.
