Etymology

From Old Galician and Old Portuguese linna attested in the 13th-century Cantigas de Santa Maria, from Latin līnea (thread, line), from līnum (flax), from Proto-Indo-European *līno- (flax). Cognate with Spanish línea and liña, Portuguese linha, and Catalan llinya and línia.
