From Old Galician and Old Portuguese linna attested in the 13th-century Cantigas de Santa Maria, from Latin līnea (“thread, line”), from līnum (“flax”), from Proto-Indo-European *līno- (“flax”). Cognate with Spanish línea and liña, Portuguese linha, and Catalan llinya and línia.
