From Middle French, from Old French lisiere (border on the sides of a cloth, edge), of uncertain origin. Probably from Frankish *lisa (rut, furrow, track), from Proto-Germanic *lisō, *laistiz, *laista-, *laisō (track, trace), from Proto-Indo-European *leys- (furrow, track), related to Old High German lesa (wrinkle, line), Old English lāst (footstep, track, trace), Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌹𐍃𐍄𐍃 (laists, track, trace).
