First attested as leonghem in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Leons, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Lieuwe (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- and hēm (“home, settlement”). The element hēm disappeared with time.
