Etymology
An enlargement of *lakϑ with the collective suffix -í, from Proto-Albanian *lǝĝ, from Proto-Indo-European *lēĝ(h), *lǝĝ(h) 'twig; hazel'. Cognate to Lithuanian lazdà (“stick, hazel”), Latvian lazda, Old Church Slavonic лоза (loza, “grape”). Topalli suggests a formation from lak (“lasso, curve”) + diminutive suffix -th and collective suffix -i, because of the tree's flexible branches.[1]
