Etymology
From Proto-Italic *lakus, from Proto-Indo-European *lókus (“lake, pool”). Cognate with Ancient Greek λάκκος (lákkos, “cistern, tank, pit”) and Old English lagu (“sea, ocean, flood”). More at lay.
