From Ottoman Turkish قوز (koz, “trump”), of unknown origin. Compare Russian ко́зырь (kózyrʹ, “trump”), also of unknown origin, and compare Romanian coz (“trump”), according to some borrowed from Turkish and to others shortened from Russian. Ultimately it could be from German Kaiser.
