From Hokkien 哥仔 (ko͘-iá) as per Chan-Yap (1980)[1] with an older obsolete form of the diminutive suffix[2][3] as a weak form of (kiáⁿ, káⁿ). Cognates with Tagalog kuya and Cebuano kuya.
