Etymology

From Middle High German klam (narrow, tight, solid), from Old High German klam, from or related to Proto-West Germanic *klaimijan (to smear with clay).

The modern sense is chiefly Central and Low German (Middle Low German klam). Cognate with Dutch klam. Also related with English clammy.
