From Old Norse kjósa, from Proto-Germanic *keusaną, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵéwseti, from the root *ǵews- (“to taste, try”). Akin to English choose. Other cognates include modern Icelandic kjósa, Swedish tjusa, archaic modern German kiesen, Gothic 𐌺𐌹𐌿𐍃𐌰𐌽 (kiusan), and Irish togh.
