From the stem *kauka, from Proto-Finnic *kauka, origin of which is unclear; either from Proto-Germanic *hauhaz, or from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kawka, either way ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kewk-. Cognate to Estonian kauge and Votic kaukaa.
