From Malay katwal, from Classical Malay katwal, from Classical Persian کوتوال (kotvāl), from Sauraseni Prakrit, from Sanskrit कोटपाल/कोट्टपाल (koṭapāla/koṭṭapāla) as कोट/कोट्ट (koṭa/koṭṭa, “fort, castle”) + पाल (pāla, “guard, protector, keeper”). Cognate of Hindi कोतवाल (kotvāl).
