Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *karhu, probably derived from *karheda (karhea, "rough, coarse") as a euphemism, replacing original *okci (oksi, but see ohto, otso). Sense 3 is a semantic loan from Swedish björn and sense 4 from English bear.
