From Arabic قَنْدِيل (qandīl), from Classical Syriac ܩܢܕܠܐ (qandēlā), from Ancient Greek κάνδηλα (kándēla), from Latin candēla (“a candle”), from candeō (“I am white, bright, shining”), from Proto-Indo-European *kand- (“to shine, glow”).
