From Proto-Indo-European *ḱolh₂-m-, enlargment of *kolH- 'awn' (cf. kalli). Compare Ancient Greek κάλαμος (kálamos, “reed”), Latin culmus (“haulm”), Old High German halam, Old Prussian salme (“straw”). A loan from Ancient Greek κάλαμος (kálamos) or Latin calamus is also possible.
