Etymology 1

From Proto-Finnic *kahleh, cognate with Karelian kahleh (shackle, burden), Ingrian kahle. Proposed to be either a further development of etymology 2,[1] or derived from Germanic (compare haahla (trammel hook) from Proto-Germanic *hanhlō)[2].
