From junkyard and dog. Non-literal sense popularized by the 1973 Jim Croce song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" (see citation below).

junkyard dog (plural junkyard dogs)

(literally) An aggressive dog which guards a scrapyard or junkyard.
