itsensä
Finnish
Etymology
- From itse and the possessive suffix -nsä.
Pronunciation
- Hyphenation: it‧sen‧sä
- IPA(key): /ˈitsensæ(ʔ)/
Pronoun
itsensä
- (reflexive) The third-person singular and plural of the reflexive pronoun, himself, herself; itself; oneself; themselves.
Usage notes
- Note that this pronoun has no nominative form.
- If this pronoun is an object of a genitive-requiring postposition, the possessive suffix is not appended to the postposition — because it is already in this pronoun:
- hänen kanssansa = with him/her
- heidän kanssansa = with them (only of people)
- itsensä kanssa = with himself/herself/themselves/itself/oneself
Inflection
- All the cases, except for the genitive and the illative, have a shortened form (see the usage notes of -nsä). Both the forms are acceptable in standard Finnish.
