1. a laurel (or olive) branch, bound in wool bandages, to which first fruits offered to the Gods were hung
   • 1587, Polidoro Virgilio, De gli inventori delle cose, Libri otto‎, Florence, page 263:

     eglino usavano […] di porre nel tempio Delfico l’Iresione, cioè un ramo di Oliva, overo di Lauro pieno di variati frutti.

     They [the Athenians] used to put, in the temple of Delphi, the sacrificial branch, that is, an olive (or laurel) branch loaded with varied fruits.
