Documented during the 14th and 15th century. From Old French herberger (“to shelter”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *harjabergō.

- Et eu, o dito Domingo Franco, soo a esto presente et assy o reçebo et demays outorgo por min et por minna uos et por meus herdeyros a pagar os ditos çen mor. cada anno, segundo sobredito he, et de abreger todo quanto se en esta carta conten por min et por meus bees.
