Etymology
First attested with certainty as edeswald in 1245. Borrowed from West Frisian Idzegea, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Iddo (“a personal name”) or Ede and gâ (“village, village area”). The second element was initially wald (“marsh forest, swamp forest”).
