From Old Danish høde, from Old Norse hœta, from Proto-Germanic *hwōtijaną, cognate with Swedish höta (obsolete) (now replaced by hota), Gothic 𐍈𐍉𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ƕōtjan).
