From New Latin hypoglōssus + -al, from Ancient Greek ῠ̔πόγλωσσος (hupóglōssos, under the tongue), from ῠ̔πο- (hupo-, under, hypo-) + γλῶσσᾰ (glôssa, tongue) + -ος (-os, adjectival suffix); equivalent to hypo- + glossal.
