From Proto-West Germanic *hlunjan, from Proto-Germanic *hlunjaną, from Proto-Indo-European *klun-. Related to hlyn, hlynn (“noise, sound”). Cognate with Old Saxon hlun (“din, uproar”), Old Swedish Lyniendi (“the noisy one; name of a lake”).
