From Middle English hird, from Old English hīrēd, hīrēde, variants of earlier hīrǣden (“family, household”), from Proto-Germanic *hīwarēdaz (“relationship; family”), equivalent to hewe + -red. Cognate with German Heirat (“wedding”).
