Etymology
Fused adverb hintan that is now unused, earlier hindan, hindann, from Middle High German hin dan, a univerbation where the first word is well-known today’s hin and the second today’s dann in a now extinct local meaning (preserved better in dannen). Later is has been reanalyzed as hint, variant of today’s hinten, + an. There also exists a herdann, herdan, herdann-, herdan-.
