From Middle Low German hantske (“gauntlet, glove”) (also spelled hantze, hantsche, hantscho), from Old Saxon handsko (“gauntlet, glove”), from hand (“hand”) and sko (“shoe”). Compare also Dutch handschoen (“glove”), German Handschuh.
