From Old Spanish fallar (to find), following internal consonant spread and palatalization, namely via Vulgar Latin *faflāre, from Latin afflāre, present active infinitive of afflō (to breathe or blow upon). Cognate to Portuguese achar, Romanian afla. For the phonetic development, compare Old Spanish finchar, Spanish hinchar.
