From Old Spanish fablar, from Latin fābulāre (“chat, converse”), collateral form of fābulārī, ultimately from fārī (“speak, say”), from Proto-Italic *fāōr, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (“to speak”). Doublet of the borrowing fabular.
