Etymology

From Old Anatolian Turkish گرك‎ (gäräk), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kẹrge- (“need”)[1], whence also Azerbaijani gərəkmək. Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰚𐰼𐰏𐰚‎ (kergek /kr²gk/)[2].
