Intensive of a dialectal Maghrebi Arabic غَزّ (ḡazz) or غَظّ (ḡaẓẓ, “to munch”), apparently from Berber, but compare also Arabic غَصَّ (ḡaṣṣa, “to choke, be stuffed”).
