Etymology 1

Probably from Dutch gijben (obsolete), gijpen; cognate with Danish gibbe, German gieben, giepen, Swedish gipa, gippa.[1]

The noun is derived from the verb; compare Dutch gijb (obsolete), gijp (“act of gybing; a boom”).[2]
