From Middle French guede, from Old French guesde, gaide, waisde, waide (“woad, dye made from woad extract”), borrowed from either Gothic: *𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍃𐌳𐍃 (*waisds) or Proto-West Germanic *waiʀd, both from Proto-Germanic *waizdaz.
