Guyró
Norwegian Nynorsk
Alternative forms
- Guiró, Gýró (alternative spellings)
Etymology
From Old Norse Guðrún where the -n is lost following nationalisation of the preceding vowel (cf. augun > augo). The diphthong is due to the -ð- getting a j sound before r, akin to veir from veðr.
Pronunciation
- (Setesdal) IPA(key): [²ɡuyʷrou̯ː]
Proper noun
Guyró f
- (dialectal, Setesdal) alternative form of Gudrun.
Usage notes
Because the diphthong in this name is identical to the Setesdal pronunciation of long y, is has often been written like Gyro (i.e. Gýró). However, this spelling would imply it’s pronounced with /ʝ-/ (palatalisation before Old Norse front vowels) and not /ɡ-/.
