From local Late Latin Gulfiani, an improper genitive form of Gulfila,[1] from a Suevic and/or Gothic personal name Wulfila, from *Wulfilô,[2] from Proto-Germanic *wulfaz (“wolf”) and the diminutive personal suffix *-ilan-.[3]
