From Old Galician and Old Portuguese guerrejar (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *werridiāre, ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *werru. By surface analysis, guerra (“war”) + -ear. Considering its ending, perhaps influenced by or borrowed from Spanish guerrear.
