Groote Bottel
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as bothele in 1246. Derived from groot (“big, great”) and a compound of unclear derivation, perhaps composed of Middle Dutch bottel (“dogwood, Cornus sp.”) and lo (“light forest”). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Kleine Bottel. Compare Budel.
