Groot Dochteren
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as thuchterthe in 1207. Etymology unknown. One tentative etymology interprets the name as a derivation of groot (“great, big”) and a second compound noun formed from ducht (“community”) and herde (“uncultivated land, heathland”). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Klein Dochteren.
