gridare

Italian

Etymology

Inherited from Medieval Latin crīdāre (to cry out, publish, proclaim) (compare Spanish and Portuguese gritar, Catalan and Occitan cridar, French crier), of uncertain origin. Perhaps from Latin quirītō (shriek, wail) (—Diez), or from Frankish *krītan (to cry out, shout, proclaim), from Proto-Germanic *krītaną (to cry out, shout), from Proto-Indo-European *greid- (to shout) (—Littré). Akin to Middle Dutch crītan (to cry out) (Dutch krijten (to cry)). More at cry.
